KraftMaid Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If you have a KraftMaid window or door that won’t latch, binds when you try to open it, or leaks air around the frame, we stock and install matching replacement hardware and complete units across Los Angeles. Installed pricing for KraftMaid-compatible window and door repair work in LA typically falls between $470 and $2,125 depending on whether we’re re-hanging a door slab, replacing a failed balance or latch assembly, or pulling and resetting a full frame. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: a sash that drops an inch when released, a lock that spins without catching, or a patio door that suddenly needs both hands and a hip check to budge.

We’re an independent Los Angeles remodeling contractor. Penhallow Remodeling is not affiliated with KraftMaid, but our techs work with KraftMaid windows and doors on a regular basis, and we know what matches, what doesn’t, and what usually fails first.

Which KraftMaid Models This Applies To

KraftMaid is better known for cabinetry, but their window and door lines turn up in a lot of Southern California homes built or renovated between roughly 1998 and 2015. The two series we see most often in Los Angeles are the vinyl-framed single-hung and sliding patio door units, plus a smaller run of wood-clad casement windows typically installed in higher-end kitchen bump-outs and sunrooms.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha worth knowing before you order anything: KraftMaid sourced hardware from multiple suppliers over the years, and two windows that look identical from the outside can have different balance shoe widths, latch striker offsets, and roller profiles. The label on the spacer bar between the glass panes usually has a manufacturer code, but that code sometimes identifies the glass pack, not the frame hardware. We measure the actual channel width, shoe profile, and mounting hole spacing before we match a part. If you’re ordering yourself, take photos of both the part and any sticker you can find. For aftermarket, Truth Hardware and Prime-Line make solid KraftMaid-compatible balances and latches for roughly 30-40% less than OEM, but the measurements have to be exact. When the frame itself is warped or the glass seal has failed, aftermarket hardware won’t save it, and a full unit replacement is the honest fix.

Signs Your KraftMaid Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • The sash won’t stay up: The block-and-tackle balance or spiral balance inside the jamb has lost tension. It’s the most common KraftMaid window failure we fix in Los Angeles, and it usually shows up first on west-facing windows that have cooked in afternoon sun for a decade.
  • The door scrapes or binds on the bottom track: Roller assemblies on older KraftMaid sliding doors flatten over time, especially when fine dust and grit from LA’s dry season work into the bearing. You’ll see a worn flat spot rather than a round wheel once we pop the door out.
  • You have to jiggle the lock to get it to catch: The latch or striker has shifted out of alignment, often because the frame settled or the door slab sagged a degree over the years. Forcing it will eventually strip the mechanism.
  • Condensation or haze between the panes: The insulated glass seal has failed. That’s not a hardware fix. The glass pack needs replacement or the whole sash gets swapped, and in a city where summer surface temps on south-facing glass hit 140°F, it happens faster than manufacturers’ literature admits.
  • Air whistles through the closed unit: Weather stripping has compressed or the frame has racked enough to leave a gap. You’ll feel it more on windy days in the canyons and the San Fernando Valley, and it shows up as dust accumulating along the sill.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles KraftMaid window and door work, expect to pay $470 to $2,125 installed, depending on what actually failed. A single balance replacement runs at the lower end of that range. A full sliding door rebuild with new rollers, latch, weather stripping, and track cleaning lands in the $700 to $1,200 zone. Replacing a failed insulated glass pack or a full sash pushes toward the top of the range because the glass has to be ordered to size.

Every number we give you is a written price before work starts. That price includes the part, labor, disposal of the old hardware, and a walk-through showing you exactly what we replaced and why. We don’t hand you a verbal ballpark and hope you won’t compare. You get a line-item number you can hold us to, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if the fix fails within the guarantee period, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself. Remove the interior sash stops, look for obvious damage, and take photos of any labels or measurements. If the problem is loose screws on a striker plate, tighten them and see if the symptom goes away. But when a balance assembly is involved, don’t try to replace it yourself. Window balances are under real spring tension, and the wrong move can send a heavy sash crashing down on your hands or through the glass. We’ve also seen homeowners order the wrong roller style twice in a row and spend more on parts and return shipping than our minimum service visit would have cost.

If you’re not sure whether you have a simple adjustment or a genuine parts failure, call (936) 259-2607 and describe what the window or door is doing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s worth a service call.
