Tamko Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Tamko fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 – $10,620 for a full perimeter job, depending on linear footage, access, and whether we’re replacing rotted posts or starting from a clean line. We stock Tamko-compatible materials and can usually begin within a week of your free estimate. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover their fence has failed the hard way: a post snaps during a Santa Ana wind event, or a gate drags so badly it won’t latch, and suddenly the whole run needs attention, not just one section.

We’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not a Tamko dealer or affiliate. That said, we’ve worked with enough Tamko systems over the years to know their vinyl and composite lines hold up well in Southern California sun, but the hardware and post settings are where failures show up first. This page covers what you need to know before you spend a dollar.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s fence product lines fall into three families: vinyl privacy, vinyl picket, and composite privacy panels. The vinyl privacy panels use a tongue-and-groove profile that locks into routed posts, while the picket line uses a notched rail system that slides into pre-cut post slots. The composite line, which Los Angeles homeowners sometimes confuse with Trex, uses a different post sleeve diameter than the vinyl line. That’s the gotcha: the post caps and sleeves are not interchangeable between families, so if you’re repairing a section, you need to know which family you have. The easiest way to identify it is to look at the panel edge. Vinyl privacy panels are hollow-cell with a visible seam at the top and bottom rail. Composite panels are solid-density board with a flat face and no visible tongue. If you still have a post cap, the underside will usually have the Tamko mold mark and a series stamp.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Tamko’s vinyl rails and pickets are commodity-dimensioned, meaning a quality aftermarket rail from a local Los Angeles fence supplier will typically fit and carry a comparable warranty. The composite line is more proprietary. We’ll quote OEM for composite repairs because the color match and fastener tolerance matter too much to risk a mismatch that shows in the LA sun.

Signs Your Tamko Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Posts leaning at the base, especially after rain. This is almost always a failed post footing. In Los Angeles, we see shallow concrete set into clay-heavy soil that expands and contracts with the wet season, breaking the bond between concrete and post. The post then floats in its sleeve.
  • Gate drags or won’t latch. The hinge post has shifted, or the gate frame has racked. Tamko gates are panel-weight, not structural-weight, and when the hinge screws strip in a vinyl post sleeve, the gate sags. A sagging gate wears the latch hardware quickly.
  • Panels rattle in high wind. The tounge-and-groove connection has worn loose, usually because a post flexed. Rattling panels eventually pop out of the channel entirely. We see this a lot on Los Angeles hillside lots where wind funnels through a canyon.
  • Discolored or chalky vinyl on the west-facing run. Los Angeles UV is relentless. Vinyl fades and gets brittle after 15 – 20 years of direct afternoon exposure. Brittle vinyl is the fence version of dry rot: it looks fine until something hits it, then it cracks like an eggshell.
  • Bottom rails sagging between posts. This means the rail span is too long for the wind load on that Los Angeles hillside, or the rails were installed with the tongue facing the wrong direction. Either way, the fix usually involves adding a mid-post or re-hanging the panel with proper bracing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Tamko fence installation in Los Angeles runs $4,130 – $10,620 installed. The range is driven by three things: linear footage, post setting depth, and access. A flat Los Angeles yard with 150 linear feet of fence and easy post-hole digging lands at the lower end. A hillside property in Echo Park or Mount Washington with 250 feet, steep access, and existing concrete to break out lands at the higher end. If you’re replacing just posts and hardware on an existing Tamko run, expect $1,200 – $3,500 depending on how many posts have failed.

Every quote we write for Tamko fence installation includes: removal and haul-away of the old fence (or the failed sections), new pressure-treated structural posts where required, Tamko-compatible panels and rails, all hardware including gate hinges and latches, concrete post settings dug to Los Angeles code depth, and a written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a post shifts or a panel fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. The price on day one is the price on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check a few things yourself without any risk. Look at the post bases after rain: if you can see daylight or wiggle the post, the footing has failed. Check the gate latch by closing it slowly: if it scrapes or won’t catch, the post has moved. Those are diagnosis steps, not repair steps. Where DIY goes wrong on Tamko fence installation is the post setting. Digging and setting a post to Los Angeles code depth, out of square, with proper drainage gravel, is the kind of thing that looks easy on a Saturday and ends up a leaning fence by February. We’ve replaced more homeowner-set posts than we can count, usually because the hole was dug too shallow or the concrete was mixed too wet.
