Quikrete Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We install Quikrete-backed bathroom remodels throughout Los Angeles every week, and a full bathroom remodel using Quikrete cement board and related substrates typically runs $10,620 – $33,040 depending on bathroom size, tile choice, and whether you’re moving plumbing. Most owners call us after a tile crack or a soft spot near the tub tells them the waterproof layer underneath has failed. The good news: we can usually match your existing Quikrete setup same-week, and you’ll get a written price before we pull a single tile.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

When Los Angeles homeowners think of Quikrete in a bathroom, they’re usually thinking of HardieBacker-style cement board substrates, Quikrete’s waterproofing membranes, or the acrylic fortifier additives used in mortar beds. The compatibility gotcha most people miss: Quikrete cement board comes in half-inch and quarter-inch thicknesses, and the quarter-inch version is for floors over existing subfloor, not for tub surrounds. If quarter-inch board was used on a wet wall, that’s exactly where we see tile failure first.

If you can still see the edge of the board behind a tub skirt or where the tile stops at the top of a half-wall, check for the product stamp. It’ll say the panel thickness and often the series. We source OEM-spec Quikrete-compatible materials through local LA suppliers, but for waterproofing membranes we’ll often recommend a recognized equivalent from the same category when it carries a longer written warranty. We’ll lay out that choice for you before the number goes into the quote.

Signs Your Quikrete Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout keeps cracking along the same horizontal line. This almost always means the cement board behind it was installed with a seam that moved, or the board wasn’t taped and mudded at the joint. The tile is trying to tell you the substrate is flexing.
  • Soft or spongy tile near the tub edge. Water has found a path behind the tile and the board is wicking it up. In older Los Angeles bathrooms with poor ventilation, this can happen within five years of the original install.
  • Dark staining or mildew lines ringing the bottom row of wall tile. That’s moisture sitting inside the substrate. The grout alone isn’t the culprit; it’s the waterproof layer behind the board that has failed or was never sealed properly.
  • Shower floor feels bouncy when you step on it. Quikrete mud beds need a full cure before tile goes down. If the bed was rushed, the surface starts separating and the tile loses its support. This one’s structural, not cosmetic.
  • Efflorescence or chalky white streaks bleeding through the grout. Water is migrating through the backer and picking up minerals on the way out. It looks like a cleaning problem. It isn’t.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Quikrete-related substrate repair or bathroom rebuild in Los Angeles, you’re looking at $10,620 – $33,040 installed for a full bathroom remodel, or $5,900 – $14,160 for a small bathroom where we’re redoing the wet area only. What moves the number: the square footage of tile being reset, whether the pan or the mud bed has to come out, and what waterproofing system we’re putting back in.

Every quote includes the demolition and disposal, new Quikrete or equivalent substrate, waterproofing, tile labor, grout and sealant, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Trevor Nash signs that guarantee on every bathroom job we do in Los Angeles. The price you get on day one is the price on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check what thickness of cement board you have, whether the tub flange was properly sealed, and whether your bathroom fan actually vents to the outside or just into the attic. That last one is a big deal in Los Angeles, where attic-vented fans push moist air into the same cavity the substrate sits in.

What you shouldn’t do is start pulling wall tile to replace rotted board on your own. There’s mold behind failed waterproofing more often than not, and working with cement board means cutting and fastening a silica-dust material that requires a fitted respirator, not a dust mask. If you’ve got a failed substrate, give us the whole picture first, then we pick up the tools. Call (936) 259-2607 and we’ll come look at it before you touch anything.
