American Standard Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Replacing American Standard windows or doors in Los Angeles typically runs $5,310 – $17,700 for windows and $1,500 – $4,800 for door slabs or full retrofits, depending on size, glass package, and whether the frame is being swapped or just the sash. We stock American Standard-compatible hardware, balances, weatherstripping, and full replacement units, and we can usually have your part matched and the job scheduled within the same week. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover a failure the way you probably did: a window that suddenly drops when you open it, a door that won’t latch in the winter when humidity shifts, or condensation fogging between the panes that won’t wipe away.

Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard builds windows under several series lines, and the part you need depends on which one was installed. The most common in Los Angeles homes are the Builder Series (entry-level vinyl, often in tract housing and condos), the Signature Series (mid-grade with better glass coatings), and the Limited Edition Series (higher-end wood-clad or composite frames). You can identify your model from the label on the inside edge of the sash or the top of the door panel. Look for a white or silver sticker with the model number and the AAMA certification. If the label is gone, measure the visible glass width and height to the nearest 1/16 inch and take a photo of the corner joint design. That’s what we use to narrow down the exact replacement.

One thing we tell every Los Angeles homeowner: American Standard windows built before 2008 use a different balance shoe than post-2008 units. The older shoe has a 3/8-inch profile; the newer is 7/16-inch. They are not interchangeable, even if the window looks identical. We see DIY swaps go wrong on this exact detail more than anything else. When an OEM part (original manufacturer) is still available, we use it by default, because the fit is guaranteed and the color match is exact. For parts American Standard no longer manufactures, we source from Strybuc, Prime-Line, and SWISCO, all of which make American Standard-compatible replacements that meet or exceed the original spec. We’ll tell you before we order whether you’re getting OEM or aftermarket, and what that means for warranty.

Penhallow Remodeling is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with American Standard, nor are we an authorized American Standard dealer. We simply know the product lines well and stock parts that fit.

Signs Your American Standard Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • Window drops when you raise it. The balance spring or spiral balance has lost tension or snapped. In Los Angeles, where temperature swings between cool marine mornings and hot Valley afternoons can flex vinyl frames, balance wear is the single most common failure we replace.
  • Door won’t latch or sticks at the top corner. The hinges have worn, or the frame has settled. On older Los Angeles homes with post-and-beam foundations, slab movement pulls the door frame out of square, and the strike plate no longer lines up. Sometimes it’s a $40 hinge swap; sometimes it’s a frame re-square.
  • Fog between the panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) has lost its seal. Los Angeles heat cycles cause the butyl seal around the glass to expand and contract until it cracks. Once air gets in, the argon or krypton gas escapes and condensation begins. There’s no repair for this; the IGU is replaced.
  • Drafts around the frame even when closed. The weatherstripping has compressed or the sash has warped. Coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like Playa del Rey and San Pedro get salt air that degrades weatherstripping faster than inland areas; we use a marine-grade replacement there.
  • Crank or tilt latch is loose or the window won’t stay open. The operator gears or the tilt-latch springs are worn. We keep the common American Standard operator assemblies and tilt latches on the truck, so this one is often a one-visit fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote for American Standard replacement work in Los Angeles. These are installed prices, parts and labor together:

Job Typical Installed Price (Los Angeles)
Single window glass unit (IGU) replacement $400 – $950
Full window replacement (standard size) $5,310 – $17,700
Impact window installation $9,440 – $29,500
Door slab replacement (no frame work) $1,200 – $3,200
Full door system with frame and threshold $3,500 – $8,000
Balance or hardware replacement (per window) $180 – $420
Weatherstripping replacement (per door or window) $120 – $300

What drives the price: glass package (double-pane is standard, but Low-E and impact-rated glass add cost), whether the frame is being reused or replaced, and access conditions. A second-story window that requires ladder work adds labor. Every quote we give in Los Angeles is a written, fixed number before any work starts. The number on day one is the number on the invoice. We don’t do change orders for surprises we should have caught during the estimate.

Every American Standard parts replacement includes our written 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. And if the repair fails after we leave, the return visit is free. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest version. You can safely check a few things: confirm the model label, measure the glass, note whether the sash tilts in for cleaning or is fixed, and take clear photos of the failed hardware. That saves us a visit and gets you a faster quote. What we don’t recommend for American Standard windows and doors: swapping a balance spring, removing an insulated glass unit, or re-hanging a heavy door panel. These parts are under tension and heavy enough that a slip can break the glass, damage the frame, or hurt you in a way that no YouTube tutorial will mention. Most window balances carry 12 to 25 pounds of stored spring force. Glass units can weigh 40 pounds or more. We carry the right removal tools and the right replacement stock, and we’ve done this enough times in Los Angeles homes of every vintage from 1920s Spanish to 1990s tract housing that we know what’s behind the trim before we open it.
