Ameristar Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We install and repair Ameristar-compatible driveway and paver systems across Los Angeles, with complete job pricing typically running $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, paver style, and what’s happening underneath the surface. Most Ameristar driveway failures show up the same way: a paver that’s sunk a half-inch where the car tires sit, edges that have drifted outward toward the lawn, or a sand joint that’s washed out after a heavy rain season. If you’ve got a section that wobbles when you step on it, or pavers that have cracked clean through, you’re looking at a base or drainage problem, not just a cosmetic one. Call us at (936) 259-2607 and we’ll tell you what’s actually going on before anyone picks up a tool.

Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar’s paver line splits into two families that behave differently in Southern California. Their interlocking concrete pavers, sold in 60mm and 80mm thicknesses, are the ones we see most often in Los Angeles driveways. The 60mm units are fine for patios and walkways, but they are under-spec for vehicle traffic. If your driveway was built with 60mm pavers and you park a full-size SUV or truck on it daily, that’s often the root cause of cracking and settling. The 80mm units hold up much better under load, and they’re what we recommend for any driveway replacement in Los Angeles where the homeowner drives anything heavier than a sedan.

Ameristar also makes a permeable paver line, which is designed to let rainwater drain through the joints instead of running off. These are a smart choice in parts of Los Angeles with strict stormwater runoff rules, but they require a different base material and periodic joint replenishment. The identifying stamp on the back of an Ameristar paver includes the series code and thickness, so if you’ve got a loose paver, flip it over before you call. We can match most current Ameristar patterns, but some colors and series from more than a decade ago have been discontinued. In those cases we’ll source the closest matching OEM paver or discuss a phased replacement so you’re not mixing clashing tones across the driveway.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Are Failing

  • Sinking or rutting where the tires sit. This means the base layer beneath the pavers has compacted unevenly or wasn’t thick enough for the vehicle weight. In Los Angeles, we often see this on driveways built over expansive clay soil that shifts with seasonal moisture changes.
  • Pavers rocking or wobbling when stepped on. The bedding sand has eroded or washed out underneath, leaving pockets of air. Left alone, the unsupported paver cracks under the next heavy load.
  • Sand joints disappearing. Joint sand locks the pavers together. After heavy rain or aggressive pressure washing, the sand washes out and the pavers begin to drift apart. You’ll see gaps widening, then edges chipping as pavers rub against each other.
  • Edges spreading outward. Without a solid edge restraint, the outer rows of an Ameristar driveway slowly migrate toward the lawn or planter beds. The gap that opens up against the grass is a tripping hazard and a sign the whole system is loosening.
  • White haze or surface flaking on the pavers. Los Angeles sun is hard on paver sealers. When a cheap sealer fails, it can trap moisture and cause spalling, which is the flaking of the top surface layer. This is a sealer failure, not a paver failure, but it looks bad and gets worse every summer.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Ameristar driveway replacement in Los Angeles runs $8,260 – $21,240. The range comes down to three things: square footage, the condition of the existing base, and whether you choose 60mm or 80mm pavers. A partial repair, where we lift and re-set sunken sections, regrade the base, and re-sand the joints, usually falls between $1,500 and $4,000 depending on how much area is affected and how much base material needs to be excavated and replaced.

Every quote we give includes removal and haul-away of the old pavers, base preparation to the correct depth for vehicle traffic, the pavers themselves, edge restraint, joint sand, and labor. The price we write down is the price you pay. No change orders because we found “unexpected conditions” after the pavers came up. Before work starts, you get a written price and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing, which means if the pavers settle or shift inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself. Walk the driveway and mark every paver that rocks or sits low. Look at the joints, if the sand is gone from more than a third of the joints, you’ve got a drainage or washout issue worth addressing. Check the edges where the driveway meets the lawn or planter beds, if the pavers have drifted more than a half-inch, the edge restraint has failed.

What you shouldn’t do is lift and re-set a large section yourself. The base is the whole job. Without recompacting the base to the right density and re-grading for drainage, new sand and pavers will fail again within a year or two. And if the failure is tied to drainage, which it often is in Los Angeles neighborhoods with clay-heavy soil, you need to fix where the water goes, not just what it’s washing away. Give me the whole picture first, then we pick up the tools. Call (936) 259-2607 and we’ll walk you through what we’re seeing and what it costs to make it right.
