Atlas Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Atlas-compatible window and door replacement parts across Los Angeles, with most common repairs running $470 – $2,125 installed depending on the part and access. If you have an Atlas window that sticks, a door that won’t latch, or a lock that spins without catching, we can usually match the part and have it working again on the first visit. Penhallow Remodeling is an independent contractor, not an Atlas dealer, and that’s honestly an advantage when you need a failing part matched and installed without a sales pitch attached.
Most Los Angeles homeowners discover an Atlas part has failed the hard way: a window falls shut instead of staying open, a door starts dragging across the threshold, or a patio screen rips loose during an afternoon wind gust off the coast. The good news is that most Atlas hardware is deliberately simple, and a worn roller, balance, or sash lock rarely means you need a whole new window or door.
Which Atlas Models This Applies To
Atlas has built several window and door lines over the years, and the parts aren’t always interchangeable between them. The aluminum-framed windows you see in older Los Angeles apartments and 1950s ranch houses use a different balance and pivot system than the vinyl series installed in newer builds and remodels. Before you order anything, check one of two places: the sticker on the inside of the window frame near the sash, or the small etching printed along the glass edge. That label usually gives you the series and sometimes the exact size code.
The compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit is the spiral balance. Atlas used at least three different tube diameters across their production years, and a balance that’s off by an eighth of an inch won’t seat properly. We keep the common sizes on the truck and measure against the original before anything gets taken apart. When a part is still in production, we install OEM; when Atlas has discontinued the line and only aftermarket equivalents exist, we’ll say so plainly and show you the part before it goes in. We also work with parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone cabinet and counter lines when a window or door repair overlaps a remodel we’re already handling.
Signs Your Atlas Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Window sash drops when you let go. That’s a failed spiral or block-and-tackle balance. In Los Angeles heat, the nylon bearings inside these balances dry out and crack faster than in cooler climates, which is why this is the repair we see most.
- Sliding door grinds or hops off the track. The steel rollers under an Atlas patio door flatten over time against the aluminum rail. A worn roller set will scratch a groove into the track, and the longer that goes, the more likely the track itself needs work.
- Casement window crank spins three rotations before the sash moves. Stripped operator gears are the usual cause. The crank body is a serviceable part on most Atlas models, so the whole window doesn’t need replacing.
- Lock or latch won’t catch. On hinged doors, it’s usually a strike-plate alignment issue from frame settling, which is constant in parts of Los Angeles built on expansive clay. On windows, it’s often a worn keeper or cam assembly.
- Visible moisture or cloudy glass between panes. That’s a failed insulated glass unit seal. With LA’s dry summers followed by damp marine-layer mornings, the thermal expansion cycle is hard on dual-pane seals, especially on west-facing walls that take full afternoon sun.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, Atlas window and door part replacement installed typically runs $470 – $2,125. A simple sash lock or keeper swap lands at the low end, a sliding door roller replacement with track cleanup runs in the middle, and a full insulated glass unit replacement or multi-point lock rebuild sits at the top. The things that move the number: how high the window is, whether the part is still in current Atlas production, and whether the frame has warped enough that we’re also realigning the sash before installing anything new.
Every quote is a written price before we start, and it includes the part, the labor to remove and reinstall it, cleanup, and a written guarantee on the work. If a repair fails inside our 365-Day Done Right Promise, we come back and fix it at no charge, and there’s no service call fee for that second visit. We’ll also tell you when a replacement part makes honest sense versus pouring money into a window that’s already at the end of its service life.
DIY or Call Us?
Some Atlas parts are genuinely safe to check yourself. A loose handle or a rounded set screw on a crank can be tightened with basic tools, and swapping a strike plate requires nothing more than a screwdriver and patience. Window balances and sliding door rollers are a different story. The springs inside a spiral balance carry enough tension to slice a finger open if they release the wrong way, and a sliding glass door panel weighs enough to throw out a back or crush a hand when it leaves the track. That’s the line where we tell people to stop and call.
If you’re in Los Angeles and want to know whether your Atlas part is a five-minute fix or a full replacement, call (936) 259-2607 and describe what’s happening. A live person answers, and the assessment is free. Give me the whole picture first, then we pick up the tools.
FAQs
Most Atlas balances, rollers, and operators last 15 – 25 years, but homes within a few miles of the coast often see the shorter end because salt air accelerates corrosion on steel rollers and aluminum frames. Inland LA heat shortens the nylon components faster than the metal ones. Your specific exposure matters more than the brand.
Sometimes. A sticking balance can occasionally be cleaned and re-lubed, and a dragging roller might just need track debris removed. But once a nylon bearing is cracked or a roller wheel has a flat spot, replacement is the honest fix, and patching it only delays the same repair a few months. Call (936) 259-2607 for an exact quote on what your specific part needs.
Most single-part replacements, like a balance, lock, or roller set, take 30 – 90 minutes once we’re on site. A patio door panel that has to come off the track for roller replacement runs a bit longer. We’ll give you a clear arrival window when you book, and the written quote covers the labor time before we begin.
We stock the common failure items on the truck: spiral balances in multiple tube diameters, Atlas roller sets, sash locks, keepers, and operator cranks. Oddball series or less common hardware may need a few days to order, and we’ll tell you that up front so there are no surprises.
