Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Boxabl kitchen remodeling in Los Angeles typically runs $16,520 to $53,100 installed, and the number depends almost entirely on what you’re doing: swapping cabinets and counters on an existing Boxabl shell versus reworking the entire kitchen footprint with new appliances, plumbing moves, and structural changes. Penhallow Remodeling stocks and installs Boxabl-compatible kitchen components, and we can usually start your project within two to three weeks of the written estimate. Most owners call us after living with the factory kitchen for a year or two and realizing the laminate countertops have started to lift at the seams, or the MDF cabinet boxes have swollen from the humidity that creeps in during a Los Angeles summer.
We’re an independent remodeling contractor serving Los Angeles and nearby areas. We’re not affiliated with Boxabl, and we don’t pretend to be. What we do is know these units inside and out: how they’re framed, where the plumbing chases run, what the wall substrate actually is, and which cabinet and counter systems fit without forcing a retrofit that costs more than it should.
Which Boxabl Models This Applies To
Every Boxabl Casita ships with the same kitchen core: a galley-style layout with lower and upper cabinetry, a laminate countertop, a stainless sink, and a compact appliance package. If you own a Casita built in 2021 or later, you’re working with the same 8-foot kitchen wall we see on nearly every unit that rolls out of the factory. Earlier prototypes had slightly different rough-in dimensions, so if you’re in one of the first 200 units, we’ll need to confirm your plumbing stub-out locations before we order anything.
The compatibility gotcha most owners don’t discover until demo day: Boxabl kitchen walls are structural. The wall that holds your upper cabinets is also the wall that carries roof load through the steel frame, so we can’t just tear it open and reframe it like we would in a stick-built Los Angeles tract home. Any Boxabl kitchen remodel has to work within the existing steel studs and factory chases, which is exactly why you want a contractor who has actually opened one of these up. The factory cabinetry uses metric hardware and European-hinge boring patterns, so standard big-box cabinet replacements won’t bolt in without adapter plates or full replacement. We install KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry, which we order with Boxabl-specific measurements, not off-the-shelf boxes.
Countertops are more forgiving. We regularly install Cambria, Silestone, and Caesarstone quartz on Boxabl units, and those brands all machine to custom dimensions without issue. The factory laminate is 1.5 inches thick at the edge but only about a half-inch at the field, which means you can upgrade to stone without changing your cabinet height if we add a proper plywood substrate first.
Signs Your Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Countertop seams lifting or separating. The factory laminate is heat-bonded, and after a few Los Angeles summers with the AC cycling on and off, the adhesive lets go at the corners. You’ll see a visible gap where the counter meets the backsplash, and water starts getting underneath.
- Cabinet doors no longer close square. The MDF boxes absorb moisture from cooking steam and coastal humidity, which causes the hinge screws to strip out. You’ll notice the doors droop and the soft-close stops working because the mounting plates have shifted.
- Sink rim pulling away from the countertop. The factory install uses a compression gasket rather than a full silicone bed, and over time that gasket flattens. Water pools around the rim, and eventually it runs down into the cabinet below.
- Drawer slides catching or jamming. The original slides are light-duty and don’t hold up to a full pot-and-pan drawer in daily use. You’ll feel a grind when you open the drawer, and the nylon rollers will have visible flat spots.
- Backsplash peeling at the stove wall. The factory backsplash is a single-piece laminate, and the heat cycling from the stove causes it to delaminate from the wall. It usually starts as a bubble, then splits.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we quote in Los Angeles, and these numbers are written, not verbal:
- Full Boxabl kitchen remodel: $16,520 to $53,100 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, appliance changes, and whether we’re moving plumbing or electrical.
- Cabinet replacement only: $4,720 to $15,340 installed, including new hinges, pulls, and Boxabl-specific mounting hardware.
- Countertop replacement only: $2,360 to $7,670 installed, including demo, disposal, substrate work, and templating.
- Backsplash replacement: $945 to $2,950 installed, tile or solid-surface.
- Kitchen island addition: $3,540 to $11,800 if your Boxabl floor plan has the room for it. Most Casitas don’t without sacrificing walkway clearance, and we’ll tell you that straight before you spend a dollar.
Every quote includes the part, the labor, the haul-away, and our written workmanship warranty. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to every Boxabl kitchen job we do: if something fails inside the first year because of our work, we come back and fix it at no charge. You’ll have that in writing before we start.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Look under the sink cabinet for water damage and feel around the countertop seams for separation. Take a straight edge to the counter and see if it’s bowed. Those are diagnostics, and knowing what you’re looking at makes the phone call more useful for both of us.
What we’d caution against is pulling cabinets off a Boxabl wall yourself. The wall framing is steel and the upper cabinets are bolted into the structural members, so removing them without knowing which fasteners are load-bearing can damage the wall itself. You’re not just unscrewing a cabinet; you’re unbolting something that’s tied into the roof load path. If you want to do the demo, we understand the impulse. But give me the whole picture first, then we pick up the tools. Call (936) 259-2607 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you if it’s a two-hour fix or a full remodel, and we won’t push you toward the bigger job if the smaller one solves it.
FAQs
A cabinet-and-countertop replacement on a Boxabl usually takes 5 to 8 working days from demo to final walkthrough. A full remodel with plumbing moves, electrical changes, and new appliances runs 2 to 4 weeks. We give you a written schedule before we start, and we show up in the window we gave you. Call (936) 259-2607 for a timeline specific to your unit.
Sometimes. If it’s just a delaminated backsplash or a single failed drawer slide, we can repair it without touching the rest of the kitchen. But if the cabinet boxes are swollen or the countertop seams have let water into the substrate, a repair buys you a year at best in Los Angeles humidity, and you’ll be back in the same spot. We’ll give you an honest recommendation either way. Call (936) 259-2607 and we’ll look at photos or schedule a site visit.
In Los Angeles, expect 5 to 8 years from the factory laminate countertops and MDF cabinets before visible wear becomes a real problem. Coastal units near Venice or Marina del Rey lose cabinets faster because of the salt air. Inland units in the Valley hold up a little longer. Aftermarket cabinet systems from KraftMaid or Wellborn and quartz from Cambria, Silestone, or Caesarstone typically last 15 to 25 years with normal use.
We stock Boxabl-specific mounting hardware, hinge adapters, and edge-banding on our trucks because those are the pieces that fail first. Cabinetry, countertops, and sinks are ordered per project to match the exact dimensions of your unit, which keeps waste down and keeps your price honest. Typical order-to-install time is 2 to 3 weeks. Call (936) 259-2607 for a free estimate and we’ll tell you exactly what’s in stock for your job.
No. The number we write on your estimate is the number on your final invoice unless you change the scope. If we open a wall and find something the factory did wrong, we stop, show you what we found, and get your sign-off before any additional work happens. No change orders you didn’t approve. No surprises at the door.

If your Boxabl kitchen is showing its age, don’t guess at the fix. Call (936) 259-2607 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll schedule a site visit, look at the cabinets, countertops, and plumbing layout, and hand you a written number with the scope of work and the warranty spelled out in plain English. That’s how Penhallow Remodeling has operated since 2004, under The Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it. And if it’s not done right, we’ll make it right, in writing, for a full year.
