CGI Kitchen Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
A full kitchen remodel that incorporates or replaces CGI cabinetry and components in Los Angeles typically runs $16,520 to $53,100 installed, with most mid-size projects landing between $24,000 and $38,000. We stock or can source CGI-compatible hinges, drawer slides, cabinet boxes, and trim pieces, and we install them as part of larger remodels or as standalone repair work. Most owners discover they need us the same way: a drawer that drags, a hinge that strips out of the cabinet face, or a door that won’t stay square no matter how many times you adjust it.
CGI built a reputation in the Los Angeles market for mid-priced cabinetry that holds up reasonably well in our dry climate, but the hardware and connection points fail before the boxes do. The good news is that we can usually address the failure without tearing out the entire kitchen.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI has produced several cabinet lines over the years, and the compatibility questions we hear most often come from owners of the Encore, Portrait, and Signature series cabinets that went into thousands of Los Angeles homes between roughly 2005 and 2018. The door profiles changed slightly between those lines, but the underlying box construction and hinge cup boring stayed fairly consistent, which means trim and hardware from one line often works on another.
Before you order anything, open a cabinet door and look at the inside of the face frame or the edge of the box. CGI printed a small white or gray label with a four-digit date code and a series letter on most cabinets made after 2004. If that label is gone, measure the hinge cup: CGI mostly used a 35mm cup with a 1/2-inch overlay in the Encore line and a 1-1/4-inch overlay in Signature. That half-inch difference is the single most common reason a replacement hinge doesn’t sit right. Where an OEM CGI hinge is available, we’ll use it. When it’s been discontinued, we’ll move to a Blum or Salice hinge with the same cup diameter and overlay, which in practice holds up longer than the original.
One more note: Penhallow Remodeling is an independent contractor, not affiliated with CGI. That means we don’t have access to any proprietary warranty registry, but we do know the product line well enough to match most pieces without needing a model number.
Signs Your CGI Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Door won’t stay closed, or pops open on its own. This is almost always a worn hinge spring or a stripped screw hole in the cabinet face. The fix is often a replacement hinge with a slightly wider screw pattern or wood-filler repair before re-mounting.
- Drawer slides with a grinding feel or a drop when you pull. The ball bearings inside the slide have worn down, usually after 10 to 15 years of daily use. Waiting too long can score the metal rail, which means replacing the entire slide rather than just the bearing carriage.
- Laminate or thermofoil peeling at the door edges. In Los Angeles, this shows up faster on cabinets near south-facing windows or above dishwashers, where heat and moisture cycles stress the adhesive. The fix is usually a new door or drawer front, not a whole cabinet.
- Adjustment screws that no longer do anything. When the hinge’s adjustment cam is rounded out, no amount of turning will square the door. The hinge is finished, and a replacement is the only real fix.
- Sagging cabinet box or a gap between the box and the wall. This can point to a framing issue behind the drywall, especially in older Los Angeles homes where kitchen walls shift with seasonal moisture changes or where earthquake bracing was never done properly.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
A standalone CGI hinge or drawer slide replacement in Los Angeles usually costs between $180 and $500, depending on how many doors and drawers are affected and whether we’re matching OEM parts or upgrading to a heavier aftermarket slide. If the failure is widespread, say half the kitchen or more, it’s often smarter to reface or replace the cabinet fronts entirely, which runs $4,720 to $15,340 for installation with new doors, panels, and hardware. A complete kitchen remodel with new CGI-compatible cabinetry or a higher-end line like KraftMaid falls between $16,520 and $53,100.
Every replacement we quote includes the parts, the labor to remove and install, disposal of the old hardware, and a written price before any work starts. That number doesn’t change at the door. You’ll also get our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the replacement part fails or the door won’t stay adjusted inside that first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That applies to every CGI-related repair we do in Los Angeles, no exceptions.
DIY or Call Us?
Cabinetry hardware is one of the safer things to tackle on your own, but there’s a line. Replacing a single hinge where the screw holes are intact and the cup size matches is a 20-minute job with a Phillips screwdriver and a drill bit. You can absolutely handle a door adjustment or a simple slide swap if everything lines up.
Where DIY goes wrong on CGI cabinets is when the screw holes are stripped, the door is warped, or the hinge overlay measurement is off by a quarter inch. At that point you’re drilling new holes in a finished door, and one misplaced bore turns a $40 hinge job into a $180 door replacement. If the cabinet box itself is pulling away from the wall, that’s structural and it’s not a weekend fix. Give me the whole picture first, then we pick up the tools. FAQs
CGI cabinet boxes typically last 20 to 30 years in Los Angeles homes, but hinges and drawer slides usually need replacement between years 10 and 15. The dry climate helps the wood, though kitchens near the coast deal with salt air corrosion on metal hardware sooner. If your doors and drawer faces are in good shape, replacing hardware extends the life of the whole kitchen without a full remodel. Call (936) 259-2607 if you want us to look at the overall condition before you commit to anything.
Sometimes yes, when the problem is a stripped screw hole rather than a worn hinge mechanism. We can fill and re-bore the hole or use a slightly longer screw with a coarser thread. When the hinge’s internal spring is shot, repair isn’t practical and a replacement hinge is the better use of your money. Call (936) 259-2607 and we’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with.
Replacing hinges or slides across a typical 20-door Los Angeles kitchen takes one to two hours on site. Replacing a full set of doors and drawer fronts takes one to two days. A complete kitchen remodel runs three to six weeks. We’ll give you a written arrival window before the day, and a background-checked, uniformed technician does the work, not a rotating crew of unknowns.
We keep common 35mm hinges, drawer slide sets, and adjustment screws on our trucks, and we can source most CGI-specific trim and door profiles within a few days through our local Los Angeles suppliers. Where CGI has discontinued a part, we match it with a Blum or Salice equivalent that often outlasts the original. Call (936) 259-2607 with a photo of the part and the cabinet label, and we’ll tell you what’s available before you spend a dime.
