IKO Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install IKO-compatible driveway pavers and paver repair materials across Los Angeles, with most IKO paver driveway installations running $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, base condition, and access. If you’re calling us about IKO pavers, it usually starts the same way: a paver has cracked, shifted, or sunk, a section of the driveway is settling into a low spot that pools water, or the sand-filled joints have washed out after a heavy rain. We keep common IKO-compatible replacement pavers and jointing materials on the truck, and our team can usually assess the damage and give you a written repair price the same day.

The honest truth about IKO-brand pavers in Southern California is that the paver itself is rarely the weak point. What fails first is almost always what’s underneath: the base course (the compacted gravel layer below the pavers), the bedding sand, or the edge restraints that hold the whole field together. IKO makes a solid concrete paver product, but Los Angeles soil, with its expansive clay zones in places like Woodland Hills and the constant wet-dry cycle of irrigation runoff, puts real stress on any paver system. When the base shifts, the pavers on top telegraph the problem within a season or two.

We’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not affiliated with IKO. That independence means we tell you straight whether a paver can be salvaged or the base needs rebuilding, without a brand agenda behind the answer. Trevor Nash has spent two decades working through nearly every kind of residential project LA throws at a contractor, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every homeowner: “Give me the whole picture first, then we pick up the tools.”

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO manufactures a range of concrete pavers and paving stones under a few different product families. The most common we see in Los Angeles driveways are interlocking concrete pavers in 60mm and 80mm thicknesses, with the 80mm (about 3-1/8 inch) version being the standard for residential driveway traffic. If you have the original paperwork, the product code will be printed on it; if not, the paver dimensions are the quickest way to identify what you have. A standard IKO driveway paver is often 4×8 inches or 6×9 inches, but there are larger-format options and the measurements matter when we’re matching a replacement.

The compatibility gotcha that trips up most homeowners: color lot. Concrete pavers are made in batches, and a paver from batch A will not perfectly match a paver from batch B six months later, even if it’s the same product code. Sun exposure in Los Angeles accelerates color fade, so a brand-new replacement piece next to a five-year-old paver will look different. When we do partial repairs, we often pull matching pavers from a less visible area (like the side yard or behind a planter) and install the new pieces there, so the visible driveway surface stays uniform.

Our position on OEM versus aftermarket equivalents is straightforward: IKO pavers are concrete, and a well-made concrete paver from another reputable manufacturer will perform the same and look nearly identical if color-matched correctly. What matters far more than the brand stamp is the base underneath. We source our repair materials from the same suppliers we’ve used for years, and we’re happy to show you the paver before it goes in the ground.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Low spots that hold water after rain. This is almost never a paver problem. The base course has compacted unevenly or was never compacted properly, and the pavers are simply following what’s underneath. In Los Angeles, where rain comes in short, heavy bursts, standing water on a paver driveway will accelerate joint sand loss and eventually freeze-thaw movement becomes less of a concern than erosion.
  • Joint sand washing out between pavers. You’ll see small piles of sand at the low end of the driveway after rain, or weeds starting to take root in the gaps. The edge restraints have likely failed or were never installed correctly, letting the whole field shift and open up joints. Joint sand isn’t just cosmetic; it’s what locks the pavers together laterally.
  • Pavers rocking or clicking when you walk on them. A rocking paver means the bedding sand underneath has been compromised, usually by water intrusion or ant activity. Ants are a surprisingly common paver problem in Los Angeles: they excavate the bedding sand and leave hollow pockets that cause pavers to tilt and settle.
  • Cracked or chipped pavers, especially near the edges. This is usually a load issue: a vehicle driving on the edge of the driveway where there’s no edge restraint, or repeated weight on a paver that has lost its support. Isolated cracked pavers can be replaced; cracking across a wide area points to base failure.
  • Shifting or bulging along the driveway border. The edge restraint (the plastic or metal strip that holds the perimeter in place) has broken, popped, or was never installed. Once the edge is uncompressed, the entire field can drift, and you’ll start seeing gaps open up along the sides within a season.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full IKO paver driveway installation in Los Angeles, the typical range is $8,260 – $21,240. The biggest driver is square footage, but two other factors move the number more than most people expect. First is the condition of the existing base: if we can salvage and recompact what’s there, you save substantially; if we’re excavating and rebuilding from scratch, that’s more labor and more material. Second is access: a driveway with direct street access is a different job than one at the back of a narrow hillside lot in Silver Lake where every wheelbarrow load has to come up a flight of stairs.

What’s included in our written price: removal of failed pavers and damaged base material as needed, new or recompacted base course, fresh bedding sand, paver installation, joint sand, edge restraints, and cleanup. We give you a written number before any work starts, and that number is the number on the invoice. No change orders because we didn’t mention the base. If the repair fails inside a year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right at no charge. In writing, on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do yourself: identify the symptoms, check whether the edge restraints are exposed or broken (look at the border of the driveway where the pavers meet the lawn or sidewalk), and confirm whether low spots are pooling water. You can also do basic maintenance like keeping joints topped with polymeric sand and keeping irrigation runoff away from the paver edges.

Where DIY goes wrong is underneath. A paver driveway is a system, and pulling up pavers to fix one low spot almost always leads back to the base course, which requires the right aggregate, the right compaction in lifts (compacting in layers, not all at once), and the right slope for drainage. We’ve been called after plenty of weekend repairs where the homeowner added a bag of sand, reset the paver, and watched it settle again within a month. Paver work isn’t dangerous in the way electrical work is, but it’s easy to do wrong in a way that looks fine for six weeks and then fails. If you’d rather not do it twice, call us at (936) 259-2607 and we’ll come look at it. The estimate is free.
