Wellborn Home Additions & ADU: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you’re planning a home addition or ADU in Los Angeles and want Wellborn cabinetry built into the job, a full project typically runs $53,100 – $153,400 depending on square footage, foundation work, and the cabinet line you choose. We stock and install Wellborn cabinet lines for additions and ADUs across LA, and we can usually schedule a site measure within a week of your call. What most homeowners don’t realize until they’re mid-project is that the cabinets are rarely the thing that delays the job. It’s the coordination: plan check, footing depth, electrical panel capacity, and getting the Wellborn order locked before the drywall goes up.
Here’s the part most guides skip. A Wellborn cabinet order for a Los Angeles ADU is not the same as a kitchen refresh. You’re ordering 8 to 14 cabinets minimum, often in a full-height pantry or utility stack, and if one arrives wrong, the whole finish schedule slides. We’ve been through enough of these to know exactly which Wellborn series hold up in a converted garage or backyard unit, and which ones fight you on the install.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To
Wellborn builds several cabinet lines, and the right one for a Los Angeles addition depends on whether you’re doing a full second-story bump-out or a compact ADU over a garage. The Estate series is their premium all-plywood line with soft-close drawers as standard, and it’s the one we recommend for kitchens inside the main house addition. The Premiere line is Wellborn’s mid-tier offering, with plywood boxes but more limited door style options, and it makes sense for laundry rooms, mudrooms, and ADU kitchens where you want the same brand look without the top-line price. The Cabinetworks line is their value series, which works for utility spaces, garage storage, or a rental ADU where you need clean and functional without the upgrade cost.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people hit: Wellborn drawer box sizes and hinge cup spacing are not interchangeable across series. If you order a Premiere wall cabinet to match an existing Estate run, the door profile won’t match, the finish will be slightly off, and the hinge boring is different. We always pull the existing cabinet label, usually a white sticker inside the sink base or on the top rail of a wall cabinet, before ordering anything. The label gives us the exact door style code, finish, and build date. If the label is gone, we measure the door and the hinge cup diameter and work backward from Wellborn’s spec sheet.
One more thing worth knowing: Wellborn finishes are UV-cured, which is good news for Los Angeles sun exposure, but the lighter painted finishes, especially white and gray, will show hairline cracking at the joints in uninsulated ADUs that swing through our summer heat. We’ve seen it enough times that we now recommend a dehumidifier in any ADU with Wellborn painted cabinets if the unit doesn’t have climate control.
Signs Your Wellborn Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Doors that no longer sit flush against the face frame. This is almost always hinge wear or, in a Los Angeles addition built before 2010, settlement. The ground under parts of the Valley and South LA compacts over time, and a quarter inch of slab movement is enough to throw every door in a run of Wellborn uppers out of plane.
- Drawer faces that sag when open. Wellborn uses epoxy-coated steel drawer glides on Estate and Premiere, and they hold up well, but the drawer box itself is joined with glued dovetails. When a drawer carries more than about 35 pounds, the bottom panel starts to bow and the face tilts. That sag is the first sign the box is on its way out.
- Fading or yellowing on the wall cabinets. In Los Angeles, south-facing kitchens get direct sun for hours a day. Even UV-cured finishes will dull over an 8 to 10 year run. If you notice color shift only on the cabinet faces near windows, that’s finish degradation, not dirt.
- Soft-close mechanisms that stopped soft-closing. Wellborn’s damper system is a small cylinder inside the hinge cup. When it fails, the door slams shut. We replace these regularly. It’s a $15 part and a 20 minute fix per hinge, but most homeowners live with it for years because nobody told them it was serviceable.
- Mold or swelling at the toe kick or sink base. This one is specific to Los Angeles ADUs and additions that were built fast. If the plumber didn’t seal the sink cutout or the dishwasher drain leaked even once, the cabinet substrate at the base wicks moisture and swells. Wellborn uses a moisture-resistant HDF on most lines, but it’s not waterproof, and once swollen, the corner gussets let go.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
A full home addition or ADU in Los Angeles runs $53,100 – $153,400, and the Wellborn cabinet package inside that job typically represents $4,720 – $15,340 of the total depending on cabinet count, series, and finish. If you’re replacing an existing failed Wellborn run rather than building new, a single-box swap, say one sink base and one wall cabinet, lands around $945 – $3,540 installed. A full kitchen cabinet replacement inside a finished addition runs $10,620 – $23,600.
Every quote we write includes the line-item cabinet price, the delivery, the install labor, hardware, and the haul-away. The number on the written quote is the number you pay before any work starts. That’s not a selling point, it’s just how we’ve always run jobs. If a cabinet arrives wrong from Wellborn, we reorder and eat the delay, not you. And the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers our install work in full: if a door binds, a drawer sticks, or a soft-close stops working inside a year, come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely check the cabinet label, measure your existing door, and pull the model code before calling us. That saves everyone time. What you should not do is attempt to remove a wall cabinet or a sink base on your own if plumbing or electrical runs through it, which in a Los Angeles addition it almost always does. A wall cabinet coming off its cleat with a water line still attached is a fast way to flood a finished floor.
Cabinet replacement in an existing addition also runs into drywall, paint, and trim. If we pull a cabinet and the wall behind it hasn’t been painted since the 90s, you’ll want someone who can patch and match that, not just hang a box and leave. That’s where our crew shows up with the right tool load and a plan for the full picture. Call (936) 259-2607 and Trevor Nash will give you a real number before any work starts.
FAQs
Wellborn cabinets in a climate-controlled Los Angeles home should hold their function for 20 to 25 years, with hinge and drawer glide replacements along the way. In an unconditioned ADU with big temperature swings, the realistic lifespan for the finish and joinery is closer to 12 to 15 years before doors start showing visible wear.
Yes, in most cases a swollen toe kick, a sagging drawer box, or a failed hinge can be repaired on site, and we’ll always tell you if a repair makes more sense than a swap. Call (936) 259-2607 and we’ll talk you through what we think the part actually needs.
A single cabinet swap runs about half a day. A full run of 5 to 8 cabinets is usually one to two days on site, not counting the 2 to 4 weeks for Wellborn to build and ship the order out of their Alabama plant.
We don’t stock finished Wellborn cabinets in Los Angeles because every door style, finish, and size combination is made to order at Wellborn’s Alabama facility. What we do stock is the hardware, hinges, glides, and touch-up finishes so we can complete a repair on the first trip while the replacement cabinet is in production.
